Introducing Glo i Natur CIC / Cyflwyno CBC Glo i Natur

We are delighted to announce the launch of Glo i Natur CIC, a new community interest company dedicated to protecting, celebrating, and restoring the unique biodiversity and heritage of coal spoil sites across the South Wales Valleys.

Founded in 2025, Glo i Natur builds on more than a decade of work highlighting the extraordinary biodiversity of coal spoil sites. The idea was first championed through the Colliery Spoil Biodiversity Initiative, and has now grown into a collaborative effort led by a team of directors – Liam Olds, Heather Light, Christian Owen, and Carys Romney – who bring together expertise in ecology, land management, education, and community engagement.

Our Vision and Mission

Our vision is simple but powerful: to see coal spoil sites across South Wales recognised, protected, and celebrated for their rich biodiversity, heritage, and value to people.

To achieve this, our mission is to:

• Protect, restore, and enhance habitats on coal spoil sites for threatened and declining species.

• Provide inclusive opportunities for people to connect with nature and heritage.

• Deliver education, research, and engagement that inspire people to value these landscapes.

• Champion the importance of coal spoil biodiversity and heritage at local, national, and policy levels.

  
  

Why Coal Spoil Sites?

Coal spoil sites - including spoil tips and former colliery sites - are among the most distinctive features of the South Wales Valleys, reminders of the region’s deep-rooted industrial history. But beyond their industrial past, these sites are now home to an astonishing array of wildlife – from rare plants and fungi to unique invertebrates like the “Maerdy Monster” millipede. They also hold deep cultural significance, telling the story of the communities shaped by coal.

At Glo i Natur, we believe these sites deserve recognition and protection as vital spaces for wildlife, heritage, and people.

Where We Work

Our work covers the South Wales Coalfield, stretching from Torfaen in the east to Pembrokeshire in the west. This reflects the landscapes where coal was once mined and where spoil sites remain today – landscapes we are committed to protecting for the future.

What’s Next?

As a newly formed organisation, we are currently in the project development phase. Over the coming months, we’ll be announcing exciting new initiatives around habitat management, community engagement, education, and biodiversity conservation.

In the meantime, we are keen to hear from landowners, local communities, conservation organisations, schools, and anyone interested in getting involved or partnering with us.

Together, we can ensure that these unique landscapes are safeguarded, celebrated, and enjoyed by generations to come.

Ein Gweledigaeth a'n Cenhadaeth

Mae ein gweledigaeth yn syml ond yn bwerus: gweld safleoedd sborion glo ledled De Cymru yn cael eu cydnabod, eu gwarchod a'u dathlu am eu bioamrywiaeth gyfoethog, eu treftadaeth a'u gwerth i bobl.

I gyflawni hyn, ein cenhadaeth yw:

• Diogelu, adfer a gwella cynefinoedd ar safleoedd sborion glo ar gyfer rhywogaethau sydd dan fygythiad ac yn dirywio.

• Darparu cyfleoedd cynhwysol i bobl gysylltu â natur a threftadaeth.

• Cyflwyno addysg, ymchwil ac ymgysylltiad sy'n ysbrydoli pobl i werthfawrogi'r tirweddau hyn.

• Hyrwyddo pwysigrwydd bioamrywiaeth a threftadaeth sborion glo ar lefelau lleol, cenedlaethol a pholisi.

Pam Safleoedd Sborion Glo?

Mae safleoedd sborion glo - gan gynnwys tomenni sborion a hen safleoedd glofeydd - ymhlith nodweddion mwyaf nodedig Cymoedd De Cymru, yn atgofion o hanes diwydiannol dwfn y rhanbarth. Ond y tu hwnt i'w gorffennol diwydiannol, mae'r safleoedd hyn bellach yn gartref i amrywiaeth ryfeddol o fywyd gwyllt – o blanhigion a ffyngau prin i infertebratau unigryw fel y miltroed, “Bwystfil y Maerdy”. Maent hefyd o arwyddocâd diwylliannol dwfn, gan adrodd hanes y cymunedau a luniwyd gan lo.

Yn Glo i Natur, credwn fod y safleoedd hyn yn haeddu cydnabyddiaeth a gwarchodaeth fel mannau hanfodol ar gyfer bywyd gwyllt, treftadaeth a phobl.

Ble rydyn ni’n Gweithio

Mae ein gwaith yn cwmpasu Maes Glo De Cymru, sy’n ymestyn o Dorfaen yn y dwyrain i Sir Benfro yn y gorllewin. Mae hyn yn adlewyrchu'r tirweddau lle cafodd glo ei gloddio ar un adeg a lle mae safleoedd sborion yn parhau heddiw – tirweddau yr ydym wedi ymrwymo i'w gwarchod ar gyfer y dyfodol.

Beth sydd nesaf?

Fel sefydliad newydd ei ffurfio, rydym ar hyn o bryd yng nghanol y cyfnod datblygu prosiectau. Dros y misoedd nesaf, byddwn yn cyhoeddi mentrau newydd cyffrous ynghylch rheoli cynefinoedd, ymgysylltu cymunedol, addysg a chadwraeth fioamrywiaeth.

Yn y cyfamser, rydym yn awyddus i glywed gan dirfeddianwyr, cymunedau lleol, sefydliadau cadwraeth, ysgolion, ac unrhyw un sydd â diddordeb mewn cymryd rhan neu sy’n awyddus i bartneru â ni.

Gyda'n gilydd, gallwn sicrhau bod y tirweddau unigryw hyn yn cael eu diogelu, eu dathlu, a'u mwynhau gan genedlaethau i ddod.
