Our Cwm Cynon is an exciting new project being developed by Glo i Natur CIC to explore how communities across the upper Cynon Valley can reconnect with their local landscapes, heritage and wildlife.
Our Cwm Cynon is supported by a grant from the Pen y Cymoedd Wind Farm Community Fund. The Fund has been established by energy company Vattenfall for the benefit of the communities hosting the Pen y Cymoedd Wind Farm.
This project focuses on former coal spoil sites including Cefnpennar Tip, Cwmaman Tip, Aberaman Tip and Dare Valley Country Park. These once-industrial landscapes have naturally transformed into valuable habitats for wildlife and green spaces for local people, yet they often remain underused for community activity, learning and wellbeing.
The current development phase will run over three months starting in April 2026 and is all about listening, collaborating and co-creating. Through community drop-ins, consultations, pilot taster sessions and partnership working, we aim to design a long-term, community-led programme that reflects local needs and ambitions. The project will bring together residents, schools, community groups and partner organisations to shape a shared vision for these spaces.
Looking ahead, the project aims to:
-
Improve access to local green spaces
-
Support mental and physical wellbeing
-
Build pride in local heritage and landscape
-
Increase understanding of wildlife and nature recovery
-
Restore habitats for threatened species
-
Create opportunities for learning, volunteering and skills development
A strong focus will be placed on inclusion, ensuring that people of all ages and backgrounds – particularly those who may face barriers to accessing nature – can take part and help shape the project.
This development phase will lay the foundations for a long-term programme that delivers lasting environmental, social and wellbeing benefits across the Cynon Valley.
Please get in touch if you would like to be involved in the project, whether as an individual, community member or representative of an organisation.
